eMule
If you pay attention to the news, chances are you have a heard a lot about file sharing software and peer to peer (P2P) file sharing networks. The entertainment industry hates these kinds of programs because they allow users to share copyright controlled files via the internet with ease, and the music industry in particular has even taken to suing private users of this software to try and stop its use. They’re not having much luck, however. The lawsuits haven’t slowed down online file sharing at all, and millions of people use peer to peer networks every day.
There are plenty of peer to peer software options out there for consumers, but most of them function in much the same way. They are decentralized systems, which allow individual users to hook up to the computers of other individual users to download and upload files. The file sharing software is like a highway for this information to travel on between computers. eMule is one such file sharing software system, but it has one twist that others don’t have – it prioritizes its users for faster download speed.
About eMule File Sharing Network
eMule was devised as a competitor to the eDonkey file sharing network (hence the similar name). Competition became cooperation, and the two networks joined forced. The original version of eMule operates only on Windows operating system, but because eMule is an open source code program, users have created variants like eMule Extreme and XMule, that operate on Linux and Unix systems. Open source code software is software that allows users to read the software programming code and take that code to write their own software, with the idea that everyone will make improvements on the program.
What makes eMule different from all of their competitors is their “customer loyalty” reward system for prioritizing downloads. Under this system, eMule offers its frequent users credits that earn them faster download speeds and priority downloads by giving them first shot at the eMule servers. To qualify for these credits, eMule users must allow other users to upload files from their computers – if you use the program only for downloads and block other users from accessing your system and your files, you will not receive any credits. That doesn’t mean you have to allow uploads from your computer to use eMule, it just means you may have to wait longer for your downloads if you don’t – since you’re not willing to share what you have and you only want to take files from others, then you have to get in line behind the people who are sharing.
